PopSocket Art, Yoga & More for Teens at Manitowoc Public Library

The following article was written by Kristin Keck, a Teen Associate at the Manitowoc Public Library.

What do PopSockets and Yoga have in common? Well, nothing really. Hi, it’s Kristin from Manitowoc Public Library, your friendly neighborhood Teen Services person, to tell you about two upcoming programs and one ongoing one.

There’s a chance to customize your own PopSocket on Thursday, February 8, at the Teen Hang-Out PopSocket Art (www.manitowoclibrary.org/event/teen-hang-out-popsocket-art-13045), open to ages 11 through 18. We’ll start at 6 PM and go to 7:30, so feel free to drop in. All supplies will be provided (and snacks, of course). There will be Sharpies, colored pencils, stickers, and other shiny things to add a little bling to the back of your phone. Make it as basic or as extra as you want. No registration is required and extra PopSockets will be distributed, if we have any left over, that is.

Speaking of snacks, if there are any requests (or allergies I should know about), please email me at kkeck@Manitowoc.org. I’ll do what I can to fill all reasonable requests. I will say: pizza is not a snack, it’s a meal. I’m not ruling it out entirely, but I’ll need a little more prep time for that.

Following Popsockets, the next Teen Hang-Out on Thursday, March 21, from 6-7 PM, we are very fortunate to have Kate Casey from Waves Studio as an instructor for Relax! It’s Just Yoga (www.manitowoclibrary.org/event/teen-hang-out-relax-its-just-yoga-13046). Whether you are a yoga enthusiast or trying it for the first time, this will be a great opportunity to relax and stretch away some stress. We will be having registration on this one—which opens online at the immediately-above URL on Friday, March 1 at 2 PM—but feel free to just drop in. There’s room for everyone.  Since we’ll be up and moving for this, we’ll save the snacks until afterwards. Remember to bring a yoga mat, if you have one, or a big towel. The floor is awfully hard.

If you’re looking for a creative outlet, why not drop in on the second or fourth Tuesday of each month for Space to Write (www.manitowoclibrary.org/events/month/2024/02?keywords=space%20to%20write)? Bring your ongoing novel, short story, or whatever you’re working on. Or you could grab a new project from the Prompt Marketplace. Take a chance in the Forest of Dares, but be careful—it could take your story in a whole new direction. The next Space to Write will be on Tuesday, February 13, from 5:30-7:30 PM in the Franklin Street Room. Writers of all descriptions are welcome, from absolute beginners to seasoned pros.

Come get creative (and relaxed) at the Library, and check out the books, too! There’s a display of collections and anthologies in the YA section called Short Month – Short Stories. Sample authors without committing to a whole book—essentially speed dating, but with narrative. And let me know what you think! I’m always looking for a new author.
