Virtual Library Cards

ALERT: Virtual Library Cards are unavailable at this time.  We apologize for the inconvenience!

What Are Virtual Library Cards?

Virtual Library Cards connect students with digital educational and reading resources offered by the Library.  These cards are limited to digital resources and do not provide lending access to any physical materials in the Library building.  One of the biggest benefits of Virtual Library Cards is that they allow students to access digital educational and reading resources without ever being restricted due to fines or lost items.

Virtual Library Cards are only issued to students at participating educational institutions (see list below).

How Do They Work?

What is my Virtual Library Card number? The Virtual Library Card is based on the student’s school ID with a predefined set of numbers in front of it and it must be 14 digits in length. The outline of what the numbers look like based on each school (or district) is listed below, along with what the PIN is.  For example, say you are part of the Manitowoc Public School District and your student ID is 999999, your Virtual Library Card number would be 12345000999999 (the 0’s get added between the prefix 12345 and the student’s ID, 999999, to make a 14 digit number), and your PIN would be your PersonID from Infinite Campus.

Not sure what a Virtual Library Card can do for your school? Want to learn about all the resources your Virtual Card can access? If you would like to set up a training session for your staff or for your students, please contact Julia Lee at jlee@manitowoc.org. Training sessions last between 30-45 minutes and will empower students and staff to utilize all the free resources Manitowoc Public Library has to offer!

As with all library materials, it is the role of the parent/guardian to select materials appropriate for their family.  Manitowoc Public Library supports and respects each family's right to choose what's best for them.  Please see the instructions below to adjust Libby to display items most appropriate for your child.

Are there parental controls, so that I can control what kinds of titles my children see?

eBooks & Audiobooks
There are a couple of options to limit the titles your children see in our digital library.

Directions (for Computer and Smart Devices)

  1. In your library's digital collection, go to your Settings page (under your account). You'll need to be signed into your library to get to this page.
  2. Under "Audience(s)," select the types of content you'd like to see while browsing and searching. You can choose one or more of these filters:
  • Juvenile: Fiction and nonfiction titles for children.
  • Young adult: Fiction and nonfiction titles for young adults.
  • General adult: General fiction and nonfiction.
  • Mature adult: Fiction and nonfiction for readers over the age of 18.

If you use the Libby app or website, you can adjust the settings so that all you see is books for particular age groups, such as kids or teens. You can also block mature content, which includes titles of an explicit nature. You can use audience filters to limit the types of content you see while browsing and searching your library's digital collection:

Libby App Directions (for Smart Devices)

There is no set “Kids Mode” for Libby, but they do offer some search filters which will remove any age inappropriate content. You can do this by altering the audience setting.
Follow these instructions online at https://help.overdrive.com:

  1. Log in to your account with your library card and pin number (To find out what your student's PIN is, please contact your school administrator or view the school list below to to see what your school uses
  2. Select Dropdown menu under My Account.
  3. Select "Settings."
  4. Under Content preferences: Select "Audiences."

There are options for the following: All Audiences, Juvenile, Young adult, General Adult and Mature Adult. You can select the age appropriate selection by clicking on the category. From that point on you will only see titles within that content range. If you want to edit it in the future, you’d just follow the same instructions and select a different age range.

Note: These choices are also reflected on your devices. If you’d just like to change the audience without limiting material availability, you would just select the collection under Popular Collections on your device and it will refine the titles within that genre or audience. There are options for Juvenile Literature, Juvenile Nonfiction, Beginning Reader, Young Adult Fiction, Young Adult Literature, Young Adult Nonfiction, Picture book Nonfiction, Children. (There are other options for filtering searches).
